MCALLEN, Texas  Today, the Texas Young Republicans released the following statement on Democrat State Representative Ryan Guillen (TX HD-31) switching parties on the same day as Beto O’Rourke announced his candidacy for Texas Governor.

“There’s no doubt conservative Republicans are gaining momentum in Texas while Democrats remain completely out of touch with Texas voters,” said first ever Texas Young Republicans Hispanic State Chairman Joacim Hernandez. “On the same day as Beto O’Rourke announces a run for governor, we have a Democrat state representative in South Texas switching parties from Democrat to Republican. In fact, State Rep. Guillen’s is the second seat Texas Republicans have gained in the last month.”

The Texas Young Republicans endorsed and supported State Rep. John Lujan, who won his special election in the San Antonio area a few weeks ago.

“We’re excited to see our Republican Majority expand in blue districts where Democrats have ruled for many years,” Hernandez continued. “The generational affinity that many South Texans have had to the Democrat Party is fading away due to the lackluster job of President Biden and the Democrat’s reckless socialist policies. And with Beto’s campaign mirroring Biden’s failures — it’s clear that Democrats have nothing to offer voters.”

Texas Young Republicans have been a large part of Republican momentum as they’ve continued to build on the federation’s tremendous growth and success over the last year. Recently, the Texas YRs held their 87th Convention, which was the largest in over 30 years, topping off a record year for fundraising, deployments to win elections around the state, national deployments to swing states, sending the largest delegation to the Young Republicans National Convention, and many more achievements. It was at the Convention that the Texas Young Republican delegations from around the state elected Hernandez as the first ever Hispanic State Chairman, and also announced the 2022 TYRF Convention will be held in Hidalgo County in South Texas. Click here to read more.
